Baobab (Adansonia digitata) – Lozi Name: Mubu
The Baobab, often called the “Tree of Life,” is an iconic symbol across the African savannah. Its enormous, swollen trunk stores water to survive long droughts, while its branches reach skyward like roots, giving it an upside-down appearance. Some baobabs are thousands of years old, standing as ancient witnesses to generations of human life. Culturally, the baobab is sacred, featuring in myths and legends across Africa, often seen as a symbol of wisdom and resilience.
Uses: The nutrient-rich fruit pulp is packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and fibre, used in drinks, porridges, and health products. The leaves are edible, eaten as vegetables or dried for medicinal purposes. The seeds are pressed for oil, and the bark is used to make ropes and cloth.
